History staff receive awards at College of Arts & Social Sciences Staff Awards Ceremony

The School of History was well represented at the ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences Staff Awards Ceremony and Christmas Party, held Tuesday 13 December 2011.

School of History staff took out two of the six awards, Merridee Bailey for Excellence in Tutoring and Akita Hodgson for Customer Service and Administration.

Award for Excellence in Tutoring

Dr Merridee Bailey - School Fellow, School of History

With her innovative in-class techniques, her extensive feedback and her insightful ability to help students make connections to broader themes and issues, Merridee is a highly passionate and approachable tutor. Her outstanding SELT results – with a 4.8 average! – shows students genuinely valued her contributions to their education, with many commenting that Merridee was extremely approachable, personable and interested in their learning.

Customer Service and Administration Award

Akita Hodgson - Executive Assistant to the Head of the School of History

Akita has demonstrated outstanding professional skills and a dedicated work ethic. In the nomination, her peers noted her willingness to go the extra mile, her diligent and meticulous approach under pressure, and her consistently pleasant demeanour.

Best Boss award

Professor Stewart Lockie - Head, School of Sociology

Stewart was nominated by an impressive number of his colleagues within the School of Sociology. His nominators noted that he is a supportive and considerate mentor and Head of School, particularly praising his responsiveness and feedback on their work, and his sound career advice. Stewart is recognsied as a supportive and considerate leader.

Best Mentor Award

Dr Robert Ackland - Fellow & Masters Coordinator, ADSRI

As the coordinator for the Master of Social Research at ADSRI, Rob has consistently demonstrated a willingness to meet with students, discuss course choices and career paths, and has provided consistent support and encouragement when needed. Rob’s nomination also reflects his willingness and ability to work with and mentor new staff, and accommodate their needs. Imparting expertise and practical experience to students and colleagues in a manner that truly assists their growth and development is a challenging exercise, one which Rob has taken on admirably.

General Manager’s Award for Innovation

CASS Marketing and Communications Team

The inaugural winners of the General Manager’s Award for Innovation is the CASS Marketing and Communications team. Over the last six months the Marketing and Communications team have successfully developed and implemented a range of strategic online engagement strategies. The team’s use of digital technology to raise the profile of the College and demonstrably increase interaction with current and future students, staff and alumni, was a multi-faceted and cost-effective initiative.

Award for Excellence in Supervision

Dr Jim George - Lecturer in International Relations

Jim’s approach to research supervision is premised on ‘early engagement with students to form clear mutual analytical and attitudinal expectations’. Guiding students through the research process, clarifying benchmarks for quality expected outcomes and providing continued constructive feedback to students at all stages of their research are characteristic of Jim’s impressive technique, as is the provision of real learning and research opportunities for his PhD students.
